The Mill is seeking a Technical Operations Manager to join our ever-expanding group. The role is a staff role with benefits and will be based in our London office. The Mill has offices in New York, Chicago, London, Bangalore and Los Angeles each with a local team at each location.
The Technology Operations Manager is a leadership position in the technical department of the The Mill. These individuals are responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing organizational technology processes from start to finish including prioritizing day-to-day projects, shift schedules and tasks. You will be working in collaboration with local and worldwide technology team leaders, principal engineers, schedulers and production co-ordinators.
Since this is a leadership position, technology operations managers are responsible for delivering advice and direction to technical staff which this requires that technology operations managers be excellent communicators and team builders.
Typically, technical operations managers work in an office environment during regular business hours however overtime and work on weekends could be required for deadlines and other important functions. You will communicate with individuals at many different levels from within the company, as a technology operations manager be ready to answer lots of questions, especially by non-techy coworkers and during management meetings. This position is a player-manager role well suited to pro-active, task driven individuals that like to get things done and know how to utilise different resources.

Responsibilities:

●      Create and maintain the best practice standards, procedures and documentation for technical operations.
●      Manage engineering team day-to-day and project priorities.
●      Meet with scheduling, production, key-artists on a regular basis to gather feedback and disseminate information.
●      Coordinate and participate in projects to design, develop, test, install and maintain specialized technical operations.
●     Recruit, select, train, assign, schedule, coach and counsel technical employees.
●     Communicate job expectations; planning, monitoring, appraising and reviewing job contributions.
●     Plan and review and enforce policies and procedures, communicate all operating policies and/or issues at department meetings
●     Contribute operations information and recommendations to strategic plans and reviews; prepare and complete action plans; implement production, productivity, quality and customer-service standards; resolve problems; complete audits; identify trends.
●     Serve as primary point of contact when there are artist/production issues related to equipment, customer service and technical issues.
●     Communicate issues with operations team and devise ways of improving the experience, including resolving problems and complaints.
●     Provide knowledge and training on products to internal team.
●     Prioritize the work in multi-tasking environment.
●     Ability to meet tight deadlines and follow up on commitments, detail oriented, effective verbal, written and presentation skills.
●     Flexible, accurate and excellent interpersonal skills with good team leadership ability.

Requirements

●      A bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology (IT) project management, or related technical field.
●      3-5 years of experience in a technical leadership position

Carole Le Goff

Product Director, Connected Home CTO team, France

I am currently responsible for Connected Life Services product management. As a product director, I identify new business opportunities for Connected Home as well as defining new solutions for these markets. That means working solution definition, profitability, partner-identification, development follow-up and launch, all while doing market and competition surveys.

I am also project leader in a joint Innovation Project on data analytics and machine learning in the Internet of Things. It's a collaboration between the Connected Home and Research & Innovation teams.

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to be strongly involved in the creation of Smart Home Services, a completely new solution area for Connected Home. Smart Home is also about providing a complete end-to-end solution with an ecosystem made of sensors, gateway, cloud platform, services and applications with operational services. The challenge was to create and develop such a solution with a small team in a complete new area for Connected Home.

Technicolor has offered me the opportunity to strengthen my product management experience in a variety of professional contexts. I started as a Customer Product Manager on set-top-boxes for the EMEA market, working on products customization for network service providers. Then I worked as Software Product Line Manager on set-top-boxes, managing a home-made middleware solution for the hybrid set-top-boxes market. After this, I was involved in the launch of our Smart Home services - involved not only in product management but also managing external partnerships as well as business development. Now, in the CTO team, I identify strategic areas for Connected Life services involving data analytics and machine learning as a way for our customers to monetize data through new services.

David Relf

Customer Technical Support (CTS) Telco, Technicolor Connected Home, UK

The day-to-day role for Customer Technical Support varies around the world, but my personal direct responsibility is to look after the UK and Ireland firmware we supply to our customers, and provide lifetime support for the project.

Our primary customer is a reseller, rather than an ISP - which is who we normally sell to. This means the requirements are a little different to what's needed with a direct sale to an ISP - I have to be more inventive getting features prepared and integrated into the firmware to allow the reseller to provide customization features to the ISPs they service. The firmware customization process is all about communication with a customer and gathering their requirements.

I focus heavily on the Graphical User Interface (GUI) to make sure the user has the simplest experience possible. By developing the GUI, the parts I create can be reused by others around the world for their projects. Dealing with the faults is where we get the biggest challenges, whether it's a bug or helping a customer figure out their network issues with the tools we have available. The thing that keeps the job interesting is the ever evolving technology, and challenges that the ISP's deliver us on a daily basis.

Last year I was given the opportunity to work on a new customer in the Middle East. We were working on the new Homeware software, which was in its early days, so the challenges were new and the network setup complicated. This made the working day very short and some of the conversations heated, but it was definitely the most interesting project I have worked on.

The best thing about being at Technicolor is the people, colleges you have known for years become your friends and knowing people you depend on makes a massive difference to your daily life, it also makes it harder when they move on too, but that's just what our industry is like.

I'm a software engineer and my job in Technicolor is developing software and tools that make production and the work of artists easier and more streamlined.

I've been able to work on some exciting software projects, including Noodles - pipeline management software that's used to manage the pipeline from pre- to post-production. Or RAPT - a resource allocation tool used to allocate the resources for projects.

I've found that Technicolor helps employees with their careers and personal growth. They understand that not all careers are built the same and they have a range of strong training programs as well as other programs especially for women.

Creatively, Technicolor is a great place to work. I've been given opportunities to work on different kind of projects, which have helped me to enhance my skillset and self-confidence. I've also had the chance to learn cross platform technologies.

Reiko Suita

Senior Patent Counsel/Patent Attorney, Tokyo Patent Operations, Japan

My job includes filing and prosecuting any applications entered into Japan that relate to inventions by Technicolor. So I might be handling and filing new inventions, supporting licensing activities in Japan, or managing outside patent firms.

In particular, I am in charge of handling all of applications relating to video coding standards such as AVC, MVC, HEVC (which Technicolor has an interest in) in order to help build a patent portfolio of these standards in Japan. I'm also a coordinator in Japan for the HEVC patent pool. This is a way I can expand the scope of job - I can handle a project while leveraging my speciality as patent attorney.

Technicolor is a global company that enables me to work with colleagues from different places around the world, to be exposed to different cultures and to learn different ways of thinking. Technicolor provides us with various opportunities to progress, depending on our needs. So for example, although I relocated to London because my husband had a three-year job assignment, the Technicolor allowed me to continue working in the Japan patent team via internet and telephone during the period.

Sapna Rai

Video Software Engineer, Emerging Products, US

I am currently working on developing a scalable solution to transcode SD content to HDR format for mass consumption. Right now, my role involves defining, architecting and developing features for this product to meet scale (10,000 movie uploads) and performance (bulk transcode) while making sure the video quality meets the standard that Technicolor is known for.

This was my first project at Technicolor. We started with a very basic prototype based on ideas from product marketing, then we learned from initial demos, iterated over feature requirement in PRD and finally planned a software roadmap for the product. We had to solve several technical challenges while learning about new technologies and new programming languages in the process, which made it exciting and challenging at the same time.

The best part of my job is the freedom and responsibility of taking a brilliant concept from R&D - such as HDR technology - and building a product that wows our customers. Most of this is possible due to the open collaborative nature of the teams within Technicolor. I also like the fact that we have the opportunity to see innovations from other teams within Technicolor, through things like hackathons, talks and presentations. These initiatives not only help us to learn but also contribute to the broader vision of Technicolor.

I do feel there are opportunities to progress, both technically and on the management side. I have not explored a lot yet, since this is my first year at Technicolor and the Emerging Products team and HDR technology is very new. But it's something I'm keen to explore in the future.

As a project manager, my key responsibility is delivering projects to high quality standards, based on the budgeted cost and schedule. My daily work includes progress tracking, internal and external discussions, risk management and reporting. The best thing about the job is the sense of achievement I feel when I finish every little task and accomplish every milestone with my team.

For almost the last two years I have been working on gateway projects. I've really enjoyed digging into leading technologies together with the customer, working with a range of people and gathering different ideas to solve issues. I've worked hard to pursue best quality in the market and build a friendly customer relationship.

I love the culture in Technicolor. People here are accountable, intelligent, respectful and helpful to each other, under the nice cooperation model defined by the company.

The business also provides multiple opportunities for people to develop into different directions in their career paths: you can move into a technical, people management or project management role. Taking myself for example, I was a software engineer when I joined Technicolor. Then I was assigned as software technical lead a few years later. Now I am a project manager, following my own career path. I still see more chances in the future, and this motivates me to do better and reach out to another level.

Five years ago, I was a Customer Technical Support Engineer in our Set-Top Box Department. Now, I'm responsible for planning, executing and delivering a customer program in SEA for APAC - which involves leading a brilliant team of Customer Program Managers and Customer Technical Support professionals. I think the way I've progressed says everything about the way Technicolor identifies potential and nurtures career growth.

I've been involved in some amazing projects, like IZE Smart Home. This was a first for us, a complete departure from the projects we had traditionally done as a box manufacturer, and involved an ecosystem solution with Technicolor at the center as a system integrator. The projects can be challenging but we always win through thanks to the great people we have here - people who make the seemingly impossible a reality. I've also enjoyed working closely with some interesting customers on early technical issues, validation, acceptance and support during pre-sales, new product introduction and maintenance phases. Liaising with customers to deliver the project definitely makes the experience more memorable.

I provide technical direction for new concepts and products that are being considered by the Office of the CTO. It's a fascinating role that involves product evaluations, proof of concepts and demonstrations for shows, as well as UX, planning, estimation and coordination.

My most exciting project so far was an early stage concept of an IoT system for home automation. As an initiative for the Office of the CTO, we develop and experiment in new technologies. Research is leveraging some of our existing IoT technologies to identify specific behaviors and detect anomalies, and future objectives include engaging social applications: This is a very exciting and growing field!
